Solar panels in Spain: decide using your own data

In Spain, generating more kWh does not mean saving the same amount on your bill. What matters is how much you consume while panels generate, which import price you avoid and what happens to surplus energy. Start with the calculator preset for Spain, then replace indicative inputs with those for your home.
Your roof and location come before a national average
A home on the Cantabrian coast, an inland roof and an installation in the Canary Islands do not share one climate or seasonal pattern. Check coordinates, orientation, tilt and obstructions. Chimneys, neighbouring buildings and trees may shade the most valuable hours; a national generation figure does not describe your roof.
HeliosROI's current hourly request asks PVGIS for 2021; it is neither a weather forecast nor a roof measurement. Ask the installer for a shading survey and an estimate using the actual roof geometry. The country selector is a starting point, not a technical inspection.
Self-consumption is not surplus compensation
A kWh used directly avoids buying electricity at that moment. A kWh exported to the grid has financial value only under the applicable contract and arrangement. Spain has simplified surplus compensation for qualifying installations; do not treat it as unlimited kWh exchange at the import price.
Check the export price, billing period, limits and eligible bill components in your contract. A commercial “virtual battery” is not physical storage, and its fees, credits and terms are not modelled. HeliosROI does not calculate export payments or surplus compensation: assess that income separately rather than crediting it to a physical battery.

What to take from bills and meter readings
- Annual consumption: total twelve months rather than multiplying a holiday month by twelve. Consider a future heat pump or electric vehicle separately.
- Timing: working at home or running air conditioning during solar hours can increase direct use. Late dinners or overnight vehicle charging do not automatically use midday production.
- Energy price: use the avoidable charge per kWh, not the whole bill divided by consumption when it includes fixed costs. PVPC or a multi-period contract is not represented as a complete hourly price series.
- Contracted power and fixed charges: do not assume they disappear after installing solar. Reducing contracted power requires checking simultaneous demand and is not calculated here.
The Spanish demand shape comes from the application's consumption coefficients, with REE as the documented source. Scaling it to your annual kWh does not turn it into your actual readings. Consult REE's consumption profiles and compare the site's charts with your own timing.
Compare complete quotations, not just price per kWp
Request line items for panels, inverter, mounting, protection, installation, roof access, registration and applicable taxes. In an apartment building, check permissions, energy allocation and owners' agreements: a single-household calculation does not resolve collective self-consumption. Confirm municipal and connection requirements with the responsible professionals too.
The country cost references are historical guidance, not current offers. Do not deduct a grant, local IBI property-tax reduction or tax allowance until you have checked the municipality, programme, eligibility, deadlines and compatibility. Incentives are not applied automatically by the calculator; document any adjustment you make to cost.
Make the decision in three scenarios
- Solar only: use your quotation and consumption; identify how much saving depends on direct use.
- Solar plus storage: retain those inputs and compare only the extra cost and saving. Read the incremental battery economics guide.
- Cautious case: lower the avoided import price and expected daytime demand; allow for unmodelled costs and calculate surplus compensation separately.
Simple payback is not a guarantee of returns: it excludes degradation, maintenance, replacements and finance. If the result relies on using almost all generation, ask for hourly evidence before filling the roof. Read the methodology to interpret the result correctly.
